Transforming the Advent season

Christina Crook, a contributor to both Geez Magazine and to the Geez AmishMash blog here on the web discusses ways to make advent more meaningful by moving away from marketing.

She talks of how many churches are making the move from spending lots of money on people who don’t need lots of stuff to helping those who need help. She also discusses some of the opinions of Aiden Enns of Buy Nothing Christmas on the consumerism of Christmas

‘“Maybe,” thought the Grinch, “Christmas doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!” Dr. Seuss wrote those lines more than 50 years ago — which suggests that efforts to subvert commercialization of the holiday have been failing for at least that long.’
