A Buy Nothing Christmas

It’s that time of year again, Halloween is over and the snow has begun to fall here in Winnipeg. That means that the Christmas shopping season has begun.

Does that last sentence fill you with loathing, with dread? Do you dislike the Christmas season more than anything because of all the shopping, stress, and the massive credit card bill in January?

Or do you just feel that Christmas has been lost in the whirlwind of consumerism that surrounds us? Do you feel that Christmas is no longer about the birth of Christ, and spending time with those you love?

Geez has a campaign called Buy Nothing Christmas that promotes exactly what it sounds like, that you buy nothing this Christmas. The consumerism of the West, and not just at Christmas, has huge implications environmentally, socially, and economically. It just really doesn’t fit with the message of Jesus.

So if you are tired of the shopping and are looking for a better way to celebrate Christmas, or you are just curious, check out the Buy Nothing Christmas website. Tell a friend about it and start a movement in your neighbourhood.

Or you can start with the video above that was created by a pastor in Scarborough, Ontario. He does an excellent job of summing up Buy Nothing Christmas. And he promises more videos to help walk you through it.
