Call for Submissions: Advent Reflections
Call for Submissions: Advent Reflections
Due July 1, 2020
Could you use a little quiet? Some darkness and stillness? Maybe some candlelight? In this moment, as summer heats up, amidst pandemic and now the street struggle against police violence and white supremacy, quiet and prayer seem like a welcome thought.
This year, Geez magazine will be publishing a daily Advent reflection book. We are looking for reflections, poetry, prayers, and whatever else you can think of that fits in 200 words.
What can the darkness teach us? Why does it matter that the baby was born in a barn? What did Mary and Elizabeth do together for three months while they were pregnant? What would the Magnificat say in today’s context? Who are the cloud of witnesses who we remember during Advent – Thomas Merton, St. Lucia, St. Nicholas, the church women in El Salvador, Guadalupe? Do you have stories about weaving your Advent wreath? How does Advent merge contemplation and resistance? How does Geez’s legacy of Buy Nothing Christmas merge with the themes of Advent?
As always for Geez, we will be looking for words that shift the structures of power, incite community, make us belly laugh, and illuminate beauty and imagination.
