Editors’ Annual Appeal for Donations 2014
Dear readers, this is my annual end-of-year appeal for financial support. As you may know, we receive no money from the sale of ads in our magazine. We receive the occasional government grant (this year for upgrading our website and creating an issue on decolonization), but that only amounts to six-and-a-half percent.
Reader supported
The rest of the support comes from people like you – readers and subscribers. At a base price of $35 for 4 issues, income from subscriptions covers less than half of what it takes to write, edit, illustrate, print, and deliver the 80-page magazine.
I’m pleased that we have a growing foundation of “Geez Monthly Donors” who invest in alternative media. (See below for how to join our Geez Monthly Donors.) But we’re still behind this year.
Allow me to outline a few highlights of the past year:
Shared podium
After reading our ‘‘Life Offline” issue (Geez 34, Summer 2014) an organizer of a conference in New York City invited us to talk about Geez and our commitment to remain a ‘‘primarily print” magazine. I literally shared the podium with activist luminaries like Ralph Nader, Bill McKibben, Vandana Shiva, Helen Caldicott and 40 others. It was an honour and a great opportunity to share our project.
Progressive evangelicals
Again this year we travelled from our home in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to rural North Carolina to host a booth for the 2,000 progressive evangelicals at the four-day Wild Goose Festival in June. We met readers, writers, activists, and hundreds of souls hungry for social change. We also placed a Geez magazine in each person’s registration package.
Readers exclaim
Reader feedback is a constant encouragement. Here’s a sampling of snippets:
‘‘We are always jolted and inspired by the contents of Geez. Thanks for all your hard work!” – British Columbia
‘‘Coming from a faith-based background that I continually struggle to identify with, it was refreshing to realize that there is a magazine out there for the activist soul. Thank you.” – Manitoba
‘‘A friend received a copy at the Wild Goose Festival and passed it along. It is superb! I hope you find many kindred spirits and new subscribers within Catholic Worker and new monastic communities in the U.S.” – Virginia
‘‘It might be strange to say but I felt a connection with the mission of Geez and was instantly captivated by the magazine. I read it cover to cover, something I almost never do anymore. I look forward to future issue and the ideas and conversations they will stimulate.” – Colorado
‘‘I love reading Geez – it has been a lifeline for me and always a source of creative inspiration for tangible experiments in living more simply, contemplatively and freely.” – California
‘‘Thanks for putting such a beautiful and valuable voice out into the world.” – Texas
The ask
So here’s my humble request – please consider making a donation to Geez magazine: Please support this expression of non-profit, independent media, free of corporate and commercial influences; encourage this catalyst for discussion on issues of social justice and spirituality that inspires people to act; sustain this platform for artists, writers, designers, poets, illustrators and photographers, about 50 in each issue.
Give online or by mail
We have sent this letter electronically to save on printing and mailing costs. It also allows you to easily donate online via credit card (see the options at geezmagazine.org/donate). Give $100 or more, we’ll send a one-year Geez gift subscription to a recipient of your choice (may also be added to your subscription), plus the calendar, booklet and thank-you note mentioned above.
