Moving away from shame-based education

Kristen Howert believes that we need to change how we teach our children, particularly girls, about sex.

While she believes that teaching abstinence is a good thing, we also need to be realistic about how many Christian young people are having sex. The number is around 80 percent.

Thus she believes that we need to also teach about sexuality, birth control, abuse and consent along with abstinence. One large reason for this is that the message of worth in relation to purity can destroy young women who have been abused. They feel like they are worth nothing because the are no long “pure.”
